England is in crisis. King Edward has no heir and promises never to produce one. There are no obvious successors available to replace him, but quite a few claimants are eager to take the crown. While power struggles break out between the various factions at court, enemies abroad plot to make England their own. There are raids across the borders with Wales and Scotland. Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, is seen by many as the one man who can bring stability to the kingdom. He has powerful friends and two women who love him, but he has enemies who will stop at nothing to gain power. As 1066 begins, England heads for an uncertain future.
It seems even the heavens are against Harold. Intelligent and courageous, can Harold forge his own destiny – or does he have to bow to what fates impose?
What did I think?
I’m not ashamed to admit that this isn’t my favourite genre of book but it doesn’t mean that I wasn’t willing to give it a go. It’s evident from the off-set that Holloway is knowledgeable in history and has transferred this knowledge in to his writing. The whole feel of 1066 What Fates Impose transports you back to a different era – and for a history book, I would say that Holloway has achieved what he set out to do.
I did find it quite difficult to keep up with as there were so many characters present throughout, some had quite similar names which made it a little confusing. That being said, the depth in every characters story was brilliant and the way Holloway has managed to incorporate these in to the main story makes him a great writer.
1066 What Fates Impose is an intriguing book that makes you want to read until the very last page so you get the full story. I’d recommend history enthusiasts to give it a read as it really is an impeccable piece of writing.
