20 mind-expanding short stories.
Inspiring, liberating, otherworldly, magical, surreal, bizarre, funny, disturbing, unique… all of these words have been used to describe the stories of Mike Russell so put on your top hat, open your third eye and enjoy: Nothing Is Strange
What did I think?
Firstly, the title definitely misleads you…when in fact it makes you think that ‘Nothing Is Strange’ everything in this book is strange…or maybe it’s normal and we’re strange? It is a very quick read at around 146 pages, with 20 short stories crammed in to it. Some are only a page long, others around 5 or 6.
Mike Russell has an imagination like no other. I would honestly love to spend a day in his mind to see how on earth he came up with some of these stories! I did often feel like I had misread parts of the book…or in fact that I should have taken some kind of drug to be able to understand it at all!
I do think, that for me, I love a good bit of structure to my book. I love a story and not what I felt was just an opening, that is why this is a 2 heart review. It has got brilliant reviews on Goodreads but for me, I just didn’t get it. It all just seemed a little too far-fetched and whilst I understand what Russell was trying to achieve (I think?), it really didn’t work out well for me. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect Mike Russell’s writing abilities or imagination, it just means that I probably wouldn’t read more of his stuff.
My Rating? ♥♥
Will you be adding this to your TBR pile?
